How KW&SC is Setting New Standards in Water & Sewerage Services for Karachi

Karachi’s water system evolved from 19th-century works to modern bulk conveyance. The first
major source, the Dumlottee Wells (1881), tapped the Malir River via infiltration galleries,
supplying about 5 MGD initially and reaching ~20 MGD after 1923 expansions. As the city grew,
these wells declined due to riverbed sand extraction and groundwater drawdown.

To meet rising demand, post-Independence schemes shifted Karachi to Indus River water.
Keenjhar (Kalri) Lake was developed as a storage and relay point, fed by the Kalri-Baghar (KB)
Feeder from Kotri Barrage. Parallel augmentation used Haleji Lake, where WWII-era works
added 10 MGD in 1943 and another 10 MGD in 1953 to Karachi’s supply. Legacy conveyance
includes the Haleji conduit and the Dumlottee conduit.
